At The End Of The Day

What does “at the end of the day” mean anyway?  Just as there never will be a “final analysis”, there is no “end of the day”.

Do the people who use this phrase actually believe that at some point in a day (I’m guessing that the point would be somewhere near the end of the day) people collect their thoughts, review issues and matters, and make some sort of determination regarding those issues or matters?  Do you do that (or something like that)?  Do you know anyone who does?

Perhaps the pundits, politicians and self-proclaimed prophets go through some sort of “end of the day” determination ritual themselves, but I doubt it.

Here’s what I suspect:  Not everyone is proficient at communicating ideas verbally – and some of the folk that fall into that “not-proficient-at-communicating-ideas” category are people who SHOULD be capable of getting an idea across to an audience (hey, in some cases – it’s their job).  So, to make up for a deficiency in communicating skills, sometimes phrases that don’t actually convey any meaning are thrown into an answer or explanation.  “At the end of the day” is one of those phrases.

Of course, this is just my opinion.  But, let me challenge you – the next time you hear someone use that phrase, listen closely to what is being said and ask yourself, “does this person really know what he/she is talking about or are words just being used to fill up space and make it seem as though knowledge is being shared”?
